Victor and Amy took a private moment to reflect on our situation, and soon after, Dimitri left the house for a hastily booked flight out of Rome in the afternoon. Our wheels were turning slowly, but the makings of a plan were like ten thousand jigsaw pieces on the floor, with no picture describing the scene.

The immediate deadly threat to Amy and Victor was dealt with because unless Eun Kyung was prepared to order and organize an assault on a hillside Roman villa fortress, my kids would only need to stay home to avoid risk.

Amy wasn’t agreeable to my suggestion that she and my son stay put, becoming animated and emotional. Looking defiant and determined, she approached me, reminding me of how obstinate I had been about my choices while carrying my children.
