There was no doubting Antonella’s sincerity. I knew my friend hadn’t lied because she wasn’t that good at masking her emotions - in truth, Italians rarely could. Her reaction to my pointing the barrel of a gun in her face was typical of the woman I had grown to enjoy far more than in a simple friendship.

Had my kids not fucked her so recently, I would have stayed and made love to Antonella. That worried me because games of sex and love amid such treachery and danger were unconscionable on my part. The problem was that intrigue and sex were such frequent and easy bedfellows.
