I was troubled by a request to meet secretly, but I had to agree to the odd location, or my children’s hospital project was frozen indefinitely. When I told him, my husband was less than impressed, insisting on coming with me and bringing his security team as well.
Standing around the kitchen counter while others finished breakfast, I felt an uncomfortable tension between my husband and me. I held his hand and smiled lovingly, doing all I could to assuage his concerns about my safety while enjoying our morning coffee isolated from the others.
My husband wasn’t trying to control me, but he needed reassurance. I moved closer, clenching his fingers while seducing his eyes with mine.
“If you come with me, we will make a bigger target, and there are two people to protect. Dimitri has got this, honey. Anastasia and Rania are coming along, too.”
“Will Rania be armed?”
“That’s not who she is anymore. It’s a bad sign if I ask her to hop back into her armored vest for one visit. I won’t do it because it’s not fair.”
