After we reached home, everyone went their separate ways to work on their closets, retry garments, and hang some for return to the store to resize or refund. By tomorrow, old clothes in bags would head for recycling bins, and new wardrobes would hang for weeks until they were used.
I lay on our bed, utterly exhausted, staring at the ceiling, surrounded by my shopping bags, considering my perfect life. I giggled when scrolling on my phone past several photographs of two boys driving fast cars, wearing a uniform they looked very fetching in.
I rolled out of bed, yawned, stretched, and made a Nespresso Kenyan dark roast decaf double-shot to combat an oncoming sleep wave and to revive me.
With that positive juju juice slowly permeating my brain and nervous systems, I showered, dried myself, and wore my first-ever pair of over-the-bump panties. As I stood in front of the mirror, observing, admiring, and stroking our baby, I felt far more comfortable than when wearing my usual lingerie. Soft, breathable cotton with an adjustable elastic waistband and double-layer crotch design made me comfortable and would keep me feeling fresh for much longer.
The change in weather between New York and Florence meant I felt too warm walking in the bright sun and then very chilly in the shadows or when night fell. While shopping, I bought light and heavy-weight bathrobes for day and nightwear, several thin and thick jumpers, and enough maternity dresses to wear a different one every day for a few weeks.
When Victor burst excitedly into our bedroom, it seemed he had regressed to his childhood, and I instantly broke into a fit of giggles that made me run to the bathroom for a pee. When I returned, he stared at himself in the mirror, saw me, and jumped around, planting both palms on his hips like Buzz Lightyear, replete with an insane grin.
