As I strolled into our Brooklyn Offices, shrugging off the chilly outdoor breeze that made my nipples uncomfortably hard, a sense of purpose surged through me, and I warmed, feeling proud. Stanza and Greg were busy, rushing around the immense office floor, pointing in all directions, instructing recruits to help furniture delivery guys and IT consultants assemble desks and computer hardware.
More than fifty people busied themselves in my Private Equity Fund offices. They had worked for two weeks, and only half the office was usable. I saw analysts grabbing whatever time they could at their desks, working on spreadsheets, studying market diagrams and stock volatility.
At the far end of the office, Diana diligently presented dozens of pastries in at least four varieties, stacking them beautifully in glass bowls. She smiled and waved when she noticed me. After gratefully accepting a cappuccino handed out by a server who saw me enter, I joined our Chef.
“If I hadn’t eaten boiled eggs and toast for breakfast, I would dive right in, Diana.”
“I have more treats coming later.”
“How are you doing it?”
“With slightly more difficulty than I first expected. My prep for the day is done, but I’m struggling to find a time slot to fit Billy in.”
“Why don’t you get help? Hire people, Diana?”
