The headshot was still on Penny’s screen. Suit, white shirt, blue tie knotted exactly the way a media coach teaches — snug enough to look serious, loose enough to look human. American flag pin catching studio light. Congressman Taylor’s face was arranged for public consumption, and the arrangement was flawless.
“Shall I continue investigating, Nora?”
“Yes. Share only with Wren.”
“And you?”
“Share with Wren. She’ll keep me in the loop.”
Her typing paused. The first break in the conversation, and I noticed it like I noticed any interruption in a pattern — automatically, before the reason caught up.
