On the way home, Emily was determined to sleep in her own bed because she had no change of clothes with her, but she couldn’t pass by the front door of my apartment building. My girlfriend kissed me goodnight on the sidewalk, looking every bit as if she was going to walk home, and then she followed me inside my building, giggling.
I turned and smiled.
“I knew you would stay, Em. I was about to give you thirty seconds and then follow you to your apartment.”
“I hate cutting through the park this late.”
“There is no way I would let you walk home alone at this hour.”
“It’s quite a sad reality to be said for most cities anywhere. Even guys alone aren’t safe at night.”
