“Bye guys. Enjoy your celebration.”
My former staff meant well when they bid Hannah and me farewell as we strolled the long, lonely aisle between those celebrating and others who were being brought up to speed on matters relating to Hutch’s coup. Most, if not all, loved my old boss and friend.
They never batted an eyelid, thinking we’d return in the morning and join the new team on its bright new adventure. But we wouldn’t, so it was with some sadness that I turned at the door leading from our office floor to the elevator stack and scanned my workplace of almost a third of my life.
It was a collection of desks, computer hardware, cabling, phones, cubicle walls, mostly recyclable. The one thing that wasn’t recyclable was my newly discovered disdain for a place that once made me happy.
