As I walked through our bedroom door, leaving my husband, something changed. Justin showed no spite, only a hint of regret in his tone, so I turned around and stared at him.
Eventually, he smiled back.
“I opened Pandora’s Box, didn’t I, Emma?”
“Yes, honey - things will never be the same between us, but we can stay married and be happy.”
“Happy how, sweetheart? I feel miserable right now.”
“Shall we discuss that in the morning, please, husband - I have a best friend to become better acquainted with.”
“Okay… I give in, Em. I got what I wanted earlier today, and now it only seems fair that you enjoy sexual freedom, too. It hurts, but I guess that’s not a bad thing if it binds us together.”
I nodded politely, not wishing to discuss our choices further until I enjoyed mine. Our bedroom door closed, and I heard a sniff and then a heartfelt sob before placing both my palms against it, tapping my forehead on the solid wood, and blowing a final farewell kiss to my marriage as it had existed so far.
